Complex Instruction
Elizabeth Cohen and Rachel Lotan
Complex Instruction: “assign open-ended, interdependent group tasks and organize the classroom to maximize student interaction.”
Teaches students to communicate, to listen to different perspectives, to give proof for arguments, and to depend upon and help each other.
Students work in groups on activities organized around a main idea for the subject.
Students are resources for each other.
Students taught using complex instruction achieve the same as students taught in a regular classroom on factual knowledge but have better higher order thinking than those taught in a regular classroom.
Teacher has to intervene to ensure that low-achieving students do not fall lower while high-achieving students rise as students come to expect more from high-status students and less from low-status students. Two ways to deal with this:a) multiple-abilities treatment - state that each individual brings abilities and all these abilities are necessary for success. This recognizes various abilities and redefines smart.b) assigning competence to low status students - giving positive evaluation for a specific act of a student that was relevant to group activity
