My grandparents use video cam and VOIP phone (as an integrated unit) to communicate with our family.My grandfather turns off laptops/desktops when not in use. He feels that it's a big hassle to turn on the computer each time but doesn't want to keep something "on" when it's not needed - kind of like turning off the TV when you're not watching it.My dad prefers reading online articles than watching online videos. He can read much faster and absorb information faster than watching an online video.Students usually watch video when they are done with classes in the evenings.On Stanford campus, the webcam feature is not used frequently in laptops.
