Introduction to Social Learning Theory
Bandura, A., Ross, D., & Ross, S. (1961). Transmission of Aggression Through Imitation of Aggressive Models. Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. 63(2). 575-582.In this article, the authors create a follow up study to the famous Bobo doll experiment which was Bandura's first support for social learning theory. This study uses the Bobo doll again, but it more specifically examines whether learned aggression and non-aggression is transferred to new places under similar circumstances. The subjects were 72 4 and 5 year olds from a Stanford pre-school and were separated into aggression, non-aggression and control groups. The subjects exposed to the aggressive models produced more aggression when given toys the aggressive models used. The study is of particular importance because it officially extrapolates the findings from the original Bobo doll experiment. It gives the theory more weight because if the subjects replicated the behavior of the model in a completely different place this would indicate that socially learned behavior can transfer and is not time or place specific.

Where it worksPerhaps the most prevalent example of Social Learning Theory in daily life is the bombardment of celebrity advertising for services, goods and philanthropic organizations. If Social Learning Theory was not alive and well, celebrities would not sign multi-million dollar endorsement deals to promote products. As people who can influence public opinion and lifestyles, they are closely watched as they are "trendsetters." If they buy $400 shoes, so will the public. If they adopt 4 children from Africa, the public will too. The video used here is comprised of a veritable army of do-gooding celebrities trying to use their power to inspire the public to vote. This video is a great example of STL because it prompted over 100,000 to register to vote. The celebrities (attractive, powerful role models) are insinuating that it's "cool" to vote and that others should imitate their attitudes and behaviors and therefore go vote.Where it failsAs is illustrated by one of the many "response videos" on Youtube, celebrity endorsements can often come off as flippant and condescending. The three criteria for observational learning are retention, reproduction and motivation. This video lacks in motivation for viewers because it doesn't provide good reasons why the viewers should listen to the celebrities. They provide reasons for voting, but not for specifically why viewers should model the actors behavior (ie they get paid a lot of money, they are cool, they are smart etc). What it could changeAs the response video illustrates, the altruistic voting video can come off as condescending and abrasive to the "learners" it is trying to inspire. Though the actors are modeling the attitude, it would perhaps be more effective for them to model the corresponding behavior. Seeing glamorous actors waiting in line, filling out registration forms and mailing in ballots could be more effective in eliciting modeled behavior. Also, if the actors provided adequate motivation for modeling the behavior, the message might be more effective.
Learning Example 1
Social Learning Theory is a behaviorism-based explanation of human behavior through observational learning. Showcased here is Albert Bandura's work which incorporates both behaviorism and cognition into the explanation of observational learning. Bandura (1977) aknowledges that both psychological factors and environmental factors are important in observational learning. One would not imitate someone who they did not admire. Teachers, parents and celebrities are all examples of people who are imitated frequently in the learning of behaviors. Though the study of learning through imitation began in the early 20th century, Bandura's work is the most recent and well known explanation of observational learning.
