Distributed Knowledge
This orchestra performance is a real-world example of distributed knowledge. The conductor and all the performers work and collaborate together to make this performance possible. Knowledge is also within each performer in that they know how to play their own respective instruments and read their own practiced sheet music. Knowledge is also within the conductor in that only he knows how to conduct the piece and know what it should sound like. This example is suitable because it fits the idea that when one component fails (i.e. if a violinist list accidentally plays a wrong note), the entire system does not halt because there are still other components working together that still enables the system to function. One thing that would improve this example would be if it showed more explicitly that the performers were actually making eye-contact with the conductor or if were more explicit that they were actually looking at the conductor’s baton. This would then create a more compelling example of interaction taking place. In a symphony, players usually look at the conductor through their peripheral vision.
